Sir,
I am directed by the Secretary of State for War
to acknowledge the receipt of letter No.1162/97 from your
Department stating the amount taken in the Hong Kong
Estimates for 1897 on account of the Military Contribu-
tion and to observe that with a view to instructing
the Army Paymaster in each colony as to the claim to be
made on the Colonial Treasury, it is necessary for this
Department to be informed of the total amount of revenue
less land sales and premia on leases shewn in the
Colonial Estimates.
I am to request that this information as
regards Hong Kong may be furnished at your earliest
convenience, as the claim ought to be presented by the
Army Paymaster in time to secure payment before the
end of March.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,
